Objectius:

To obtain a greater knowledge about Minorca’s history from the prehistoric era to the 21st century.

To find out about the British 18th century in Minorca to be able to research its footprints in the current Minorca.

To discover the British inheritances in Minorca by researching on the following topics: Language, architecture, art and culture.

Hipòtesis:

The hypothesis of this project was to find out if Minorca’s 18th century that was characterized by the British domain left a mark on the island that can still be found nowadays.

El procés:

I started my project by dividing it into two parts. The first one is Minorca’s history from the prehistoric era to the 21st century. It is essential to have an idea of the island’s past to be able to understand the importance of the conclusions obtained.

Moreover, the second and most important part of the project is composed by the four studies on the British inheritance in the actual Minorca: The linguistic influence, the architectural influence, the art influence and the cultural influence.

Having said that, every research on the four topics that were just stated above is subdivided into one or more studies related to that area.

To make sure that the information, which I was looking for, was reliable I decided to visit Minorca for three days. It was there where I did my researches by visiting museums related to the 18th century, taking many pictures that feature in my studies and interviewing two experts in my project topic: Amador Marí Puig; a minorcan historian who has dedicated most of his career path studying Minorca’s economy and society of the 18th and 19th century. Furthermore, Josefina Salord who is a linguist that has published many books with the aim of preserving the richness of Minorca’s own language.

Conclusions:

After researching on the 18th century in Minorca and visiting the island itself I concluded that the British are gone but they left and impressive mark behind which now is part of the richness of this small singular Mediterranean island. I first thought that I was going to find a clear influence on Minorca’s language but I did not expect at all to find that British past reflected in Minorca’s 21st century architecture, art, culture and language.
