Mirem el paisatge que ens envolta i veiem que els arbres opten per dues maneres d\u2019afrontar l\u2019hivern molt diferents. Molts arbres deixen caure les fulles a la tardor, per\u00f2 d&#8217;altres es mantenen verds fins i tot en ple hivern. Deixar anar les fulles per evitar morir, sabent que les podr\u00e0s tornar a refer quan arribi el bon temps, sembla una bona estrat\u00e8gia\u2026 per\u00f2 qu\u00e8 passa quan no tens garantida aquesta opci\u00f3? Doncs no et queda m\u00e9s remei que mantenir les fulles. Quan arriba la tardor, s\u2019observen uns canvis espectaculars de color en les seves fulles, fins que, finalment, cauen. En certs ecosistemes, com ara els tropicals, les fulles dels arbres es tornen grogues i cauen quan el balan\u00e7 d\u2019aigua esdev\u00e9 desfavorable; aqu\u00ed, en canvi, la caiguda \u00e9s una adaptaci\u00f3 no a la sequera, sin\u00f3 a l&#8217;exist\u00e8ncia d\u2019un per\u00edode relativament fred. A la tardor, els baixos nivells de llum i les temperatures redueixen la producci\u00f3 de clorofil\u00b7la (tipus a mostrat) en arbres caducifolis. Despr\u00e9s es descompon, permetent que els grocs i taronges dels pigments carotenoides es facin visibles. I mantenen tot l\u2019any les seves fulles verdes. Com s\u2019ho fan? I per qu\u00e8 decideixen no llen\u00e7ar-les?<br>uan els arbres caducifolis perden les fulles, tamb\u00e9 perden els nutrients que les formaven.  Aix\u00f2 \u00e9s cost\u00f3s, sobretot si creixes en s\u00f2ls pobres en nutrients, com ho fan molts arbres perennifolis. A certes al\u00e7ades i en climes freds, la fullaraca no es descompon amb la suficient rapidesa per permetre que els nutrients tornin al s\u00f2l, de manera que mantenir les fulles tot l\u2019any \u00e9s una bona idea. Per\u00f2 com s\u2019ho fan per evitar que aquestes parts vives es congelin i provoquin danys irreparables en l\u2019arbre?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mesura que s\u2019acosta l\u2019hivern, els arbres comencen a aclimatar-se al fred a partir de la tardor, modificant les seves c\u00e8l\u00b7lules vives per resistir les baixes temperatures. L\u2019objectiu \u00e9s que les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules vives dels arbres evitin la congelaci\u00f3. Aquest proc\u00e9s inclou tres estrat\u00e8gies principals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Flexibilitzaci\u00f3 de membranes cel\u00b7lulars<\/strong>: Les membranes es tornen m\u00e9s flexibles, permetent que l\u2019aigua surti de les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules i es desplaci cap als espais entre elles. Aix\u00f2 redueix l\u2019espai ocupat pel l\u00edquid dins les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules, evitant pressions i danys indesitjables quan es congelen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Generaci\u00f3 del seu propi anticongelant<\/strong>: Durant la tardor, els arbres converteixen el mid\u00f3 en sucres (<strong>glucosa<\/strong>), que actuen com a anticongelants naturals. Aquests sucres concentren els l\u00edquids cel\u00b7lulars i redueixen el punt de congelaci\u00f3 dins de les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules vives, mentre que l\u2019aigua sense sucre entre les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules, si es congela, aixafa les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules per\u00f2 no les danya ja que les membranes estan flexibilitzades.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fase de vidre<\/strong>: Quan les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules es deshidraten a causa dels dos processos esmentats anteriorment, els seus l\u00edquids es tornen tan viscosos que semblen s\u00f2lids: una fase anomenada &#8220;fase de vidre&#8221;. Aquest proc\u00e9s evita que es formi gel dins de les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules vives, mantenint-les operatives en temperatures baixes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Controlar el tamany dels cristalls de gel<\/strong>: S\u2019ha detectat que certes esp\u00e8cies vegetals generen prote\u00efnes que minimitzen el tamany dels cristalls de gel. Els arbres produeixen prote\u00efnes anticongelants que s&#8217;uneixen als cristalls de gel, inhibeixen el seu creixement i en varien la forma, canviant les estructures en forma d&#8217;agulla que danyen les c\u00e8l\u00b7lules. En conjunt, aquests processos ajuden els arbres a resistir les condicions extremes de l\u2019hivern i a protegir les parts vitals del seu organisme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aix\u00ed \u00e9s com els arbres d\u2019alta muntanya s\u00f3n capa\u00e7os de mantenir les seves fulles sense congelar-se. Per\u00f2 quan pugem a Aig\u00fcestortes a l\u2019hivern i veiem els avets i els pins negres amb les seves ac\u00edcules verdes, no vol dir que estiguin actius! La veritat \u00e9s que els arbres de fulla perenne en climes freds fan molt poca fotos\u00edntesi a l&#8217;hivern, encara que faci Sol. El problema \u00e9s l&#8217;aigua. Segur que n\u2019hi ha, per\u00f2 majorit\u00e0riament en estat s\u00f2lid. Qualsevol organisme fotosint\u00e8tic, inclosos els arbres, necessita dividir l&#8217;aigua en hidrogen i oxigen durant la fotos\u00edntesi. Sense garantia d\u2019aigua, a la pr\u00e0ctica l\u2019organisme minimitza l\u2019acci\u00f3 fotosint\u00e8tica i s\u2019ha de concentrar en minimitzar els danys oxidatius que suposa rebre radiaci\u00f3 solar i no poder emprar-la per fer la fotos\u00edntesi tot i tenir fulles&#8230; Tot plegat \u00e9s ben complex!
