Es caracteritza per la pres\u00e8ncia d&#8217;un grau variable de <a title=\"Retard mental\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Retard_mental\">retard mental<\/a> i uns trets f\u00edsics peculiars que li donen un aspecte recognoscible. \u00c9s la causa m\u00e9s freq\u00fcent de <a title=\"Discapacitat\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Discapacitat\">discapacitat<\/a> ps\u00edquica <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cong\u00e8nit\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cong%C3%A8nit\">cong\u00e8nita<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%ADndrome_de_Down#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> i deu el seu nom a <a title=\"John Langdon Haydon Down\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Langdon_Haydon_Down\">John Langdon Haydon Down<\/a> que va ser el primer a descriure aquesta alteraci\u00f3 gen\u00e8tica en <a title=\"1866\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1866\">1866<\/a>, encara que mai va arribar a descobrir les causes que la produ\u00efen. Al juliol de <a title=\"1958\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1958\">1958<\/a> un jove investigador, <a title=\"J\u00e9r\u00f4me Lejeune\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J%C3%A9r%C3%B4me_Lejeune\">J\u00e9r\u00f4me Lejeune<\/a>, va descobrir que la s\u00edndrome \u00e9s una alteraci\u00f3 en l&#8217;esmentat parell de cromosomes.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%ADndrome_de_Down#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Cadascuna de les <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"C\u00e8l\u00b7lules\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C%C3%A8l%C2%B7lules\">c\u00e8l\u00b7lules<\/a> de l&#8217;\u00e9sser hum\u00e0 posseeix en el seu nucli 23 parells de cromosomes. Cada progenitor aporta a la seva descend\u00e8ncia la meitat de la informaci\u00f3 gen\u00e8tica, en forma d&#8217;un cromosoma de cada parell. 22 d&#8217;aquests parells es denominen <a title=\"Autosoma\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autosoma\">autosomes<\/a> i l&#8217;\u00faltim correspon als <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cromosoma sexual\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cromosoma_sexual\">cromosomes sexuals<\/a> (<a title=\"Cromosoma X\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cromosoma_X\">X<\/a> o <a title=\"Cromosoma Y\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cromosoma_Y\">Y<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Tradicionalment els parells de cromosomes es descriuen i nomenen en funci\u00f3 de la seva grand\u00e0ria, del parell 1 al 22 (de major a menor), m\u00e9s el parell de cromosomes sexuals abans esmentat. El cromosoma 21 \u00e9s el m\u00e9s petit, en realitat, pel que hauria d&#8217;ocupar el lloc 22, per\u00f2 un error en la convenci\u00f3 de <a title=\"Denver\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denver\">Denver<\/a> de l&#8217;any <a title=\"1960\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1960\">1960<\/a>, que va assignar la s\u00edndrome de Down al parell 21 ha perdurat fins als nostres dies, i aquesta nomenclatura s&#8217;ha mantingut per raons pr\u00e0ctiques.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%ADndrome_de_Down#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>El cromosoma 21 cont\u00e9 aproximadament l&#8217;1% de la informaci\u00f3 gen\u00e8tica d&#8217;un individu en una mica m\u00e9s de 400 <a title=\"Gen\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gen\">gens<\/a>, encara que avui dia nom\u00e9s es coneix amb precisi\u00f3 la funci\u00f3 d&#8217;uns pocs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">El 21 de mar\u00e7 \u00e9s la diada internacional de la s\u00edndrome de Down. La data va ser seleccionada per la <a href=\"https:\/\/ds-int.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Down Syndrome International<\/a>\u00a0perqu\u00e8 el n\u00famero significatiu de la triplicaci\u00f3 del vig\u00e8sim primer cromosoma correspondria al mes 3, dia 21. La idea original va ser proposada per <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stylianos_Antonarakis\" target=\"_blank\">Stylianos E. Antonarakis<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, metge genetista a Su\u00efssa i\u00a0adoptat per ART21..
